I purchased the Yard Butler Roto Digger 30-Inch Long 1.75-Inch Diameter #RD-2 to use it for something it was not meant to be used for. I'm building a pool house and the location of the front door has changed. I had to crawl under the pool house and dig 2 holes that needed to be 8"X8"24" deep. This needed to be done in a 2 foot tall work area. My plan was to use the Roto Digger. I ended up using something else but the Roto Digger was tough. Held together dig after dig in red clay type soil. I'd recommend this product and plan on using it again when I start planting bulbs.

I bought the Yard Butler 30-inch roto digger to aerate my flower beds. I ended up using it for that and also to plant flowers/bulbs and to install fence posts. It has many uses and is long enough so that you don't have to break your back bending over all day long. It digs great post holes! Sometimes, if you hit a root, it slips in the drill chuck. I think that's more a function of my cheapy drill than the roto digger. I love this product.

Nice long length to allow use standing up. Two of us planted 56 bulbs, covered & fertilized in less than an hour in clay soil thru turf to "naturalize" bulbs in lawn, not in a bed with prepared soil. This item made the job go quickly, what a joy. When you hit a rock or a root, you just have to move over some. No good will come from trying to force this to drill through dense objects. Use some finese & even my doubting Thomas became excited to use it on other planting projects he was dreaming up. We never had to tighten this once for any of our 56 bulbs, we had to move over some 7-8 times when encountering buried obstacles. Actual smoke will come out of the hole if you persist drilling on a rock or root the size of a finger. If you think this 30" auger will push thru anything, it will not. If you want to put a hole or 60 holes in the dirt/turf/clay hard soil, no problem.

I used this to dig the holes for the big plant food sticks, using my rechargable drill. Did a fantastic job, though did quick work on the charged battery (digging in Florida's floratam grass). Nice to not have to bend over and dig the holes by hand. Packaging could have been better, as the shaft went through the box, and got a little bent, which makes it really wobbly. Still a great drill for my purposes.

I love this thing. Without bending over I can make holes in seconds even in hard packed dirt, then just plug in the little plants and you're done. I have lots of tree roots to contend with and with this tool, I know right away if the spot I've picked is suitable or if a large root lurks below the surface and I should move my hole a couple of inches. The hole this unit makes is ideal for the small plants in flat trays--and of course, bulbs. For larger sized plants, I can make several holes right together or just wiggle the auger to enlarge the cavity and so far have been able to make holes for plants in pots up to 3" pretty easily. I wish I'd discovered this thing years ago. It makes spring planting soooo much easier.

19.) Great, for the price
Reviewed by: John Doe Pittsburgh, PA USA

For the price, this soil auger cannot be beat. I was suprised at how well it worked. One thing you don't want to do is use this auger with a drill which has a lot of torque, as this will bend the shaft at the drill's connection, sending it wobbling all over the place.
20.) Not Bad, but it is Limited
Reviewed by: Call me Kevin North Carolina
Rating:
Not a bad item for the price, since it does exactly what it advertises. It will dig 1.75" holes, and "can" save you a considerable amount of work. A few things that you will want to consider in deciding if this the right tool for you.
1- It really does require the power of an electric drill. Unless you have sandy soil I doubt that a rechargeable drill will have enough power.
2- Not heat-treated steel - So you have to be careful on how much force you push down onto the head... it will warp!
3- For some unknown reason the the end is round - a hex end would have made it much easier to fit into your chuck.
4- The end is not very aggressive - it does not have the profile of a drill-head, which makes chewing through clay a big challenge.
5- You need to be careful - if the yard-butler hits a soft section of soil it will cause a lot of torque on the drill... meaning that you could easily hurt your wrist. I would suggest a hammer style drill
Despite the issues I stated above it really does work decent. I would not consider it if was 2x the cost, but for the price point it is effective, and you are unlikely to be disappointed.

21.) Not bad for the price.

Bought this to drill holes for 30" ground spikes that will support a 4x4 and a temporary fence. Made pounding the spikes into the ground so much easier. I would recommend using a hammer drill if you have to dig farther than 6". My 19.2 V cordless drill works okay for turning soil and planting bulbs. If you have to dig deep it helps if you wet the area and pour more water into the hole about halfway through digging. It would have gotten 5 stars if it had a hex head. You sometimes have to stop and tighten the chuck. If it breaks I'd buy it again.
22.) Not Perfectly Designed Or Constructed, But Makes Short Work Of Planting Bulbs
Reviewed by: Lawrence Massachusetts

I bought this to save time and my back while planting 200 bulbs this fall. I really did not experience any issues with the auger loosening up from the drill head, but a less rounded shaft would have been a better idea. I went through two full charges on the drill's batteries, but I could not believe how quickly or easily it was to plant bulbs this year. It got hung up on a few stones and roots, but that was no big deal for me -- I just moved over a few inches. The drill may twist in your hand if the auger gets stuck, so be careful if you are weak wristed. I found that putting the drill in reverse helps to get the auger unstuck.
23.) bulb auger
Reviewed by: Stephen L. Derynck north carolina
Rating:
The auger made holes 6 inches deep with ease into hard rocky ground. The 1.75 diameter was a bit small for some of the bulbs. A 2 inch auger would have been better. It was also dificult to tighten the auger into the drill chuck tightly enough to prevent slipping.
24.) Good for Small Plantings with the Right Drill
Reviewed by: Alaina
Rating:
The Roto Digger made nice deep holes in "perfect" conditions: a nice loamy soil which was slightly damp. Dry soil just crumbled into the hole and hard soil couldn't be penetrated. A key component with this auger is the drill- I recommend a strong, corded drill, not a battery operated drill. My 18.2v Craftsman drill batteries drained very quickly when the load was significant, such as the case with hard, dry soil.
This device is great for smaller plantings and seems durable enough that I'll be able to use it for years to come.

Reviewed by: Murrah L. Watson Jr. Cohutta, GA

I think that this is probably a very useful tool under the right conditions. However it is virtually useless in hard and rocky soil. The dirt needs to be loose and root free. Also the end of the shaft that sticks into the drill should be ground with several flat edges rather than perfectly round so that the drill can get a better grip on it.

Works fine. Used for drilling holes for auger / stakes to put in ground to hold up my trees from this crazy winter in the eastern USA.
Would be perfect if it had a better end to keep from slipping in a drill bit, but not that big a deal.
I ground the end down, flatter, on a grinding wheel so it wouldn't slip - now perfect.

No one related to the production of this product has thought about grinding the
