This item came quickly and looks to be very well made. If you have a plastic compost bin, this is an must-have item. I've found that jabbing the tool into the compost a few times (without completely removing the tool from the compost prior to each jab) will get it to the bottom of the heap in no time. Then, rock it back and forth while pulling upward. The rocking action will cause the wings to deploy outward (I have no idea why this is) and also create a hole down through the pile. And that air hole should help accelerate the decaying process.

You plunge it in to your compost, you pull it out. It stirs, it mixes, it increased microbial bliss. Much better than an old rake in smaller compost containers. If you compost, this is what you need to buy next.

This tool made quick work of turning my compost. I'm using a big yard trash-can for my compost and couldn't turn it with a pitchfork or hoe. This tool drove right into the full can and quickly mixed things up.
An earlier review said the "wings" are short, but I think it's the perfect size for a garbage-can sized container. If they were any bigger it would pull up too much compost and make a mess. Sturdy construction & soft handle too. I highly recommend this!

Yard Butler CA-36 Compost Aerator
Just started composting this year and needed an aerator. This one is excellent. Push it into the compost and then pull up. The blades on the end of the aerator open up and help mix the compost. It's easy, quick and fun to use. Excellent quality for a reasonable price.

I have a 4X4 foot compost bin. Turning with a shovel or pitch fork didn't mix as well as I liked. This aerator has been ideal. It's sturdy. Cleans up easily. I love it!

This works great for turning and aerating. I have an Earth Machine compost bin, and after a year of struggling to turn it with hoes, shovels, rakes and anything else I could find, the Yard Butler did the trick. I was able to easily turn the entire contents in just a minute or two. The "wings" do a great job of lifting material from the very bottom of the bin.

I am a disabled veteran and have always had trouble turning my compost. This tool has made the chore a joy! It is so simple to use, is effective, and has greatly enhanced my gardening experience. Using this tool allows me to make compost much more quickly and is no longer a strain on my back. Thank you for a wonderful product without which I most certainly would have stopped making compost.

i've had my yard butler for about 1 month. i have one of those barrel type composters that's next to impossible to be able to turn over and aerate the contents, this item works well. the only wish i could have for it, is if the wings that open on it were a little bit longer, i have to stick it into the composter several times to really turn the stuff over. that said, i would still recommend it, it's a nifty tool that solved my problem. ed

14.) Better than nothing for enclosed compost bins

The best way to turn a compost heap is to get a garden fork and just go to town, but if you have those closed plastic bins (like I do now), that's not a viable option.
That's why I bought this compost tool and it's better than nothing since at least it helps move the compost around. However, it's not easy to push the tool down into the heap and half the time, the tines don't open up when you pull it back up. The tines are also quite short, so they don't catch much when they do open.
Still, I haven't found a better alternative and if you use a up and down motion (rather like churning butter) it helps somewhat.
In short, I give it a qualified recommendation if you have no other way of turning your contained compost pile.

This is a great essental tool, but be aware that if you also us biodegradable compost bags they will stick on the tool and be really hard to remove.
16.) It's Ok But Not Great!

Well I purchased this after reading reviews and although it works it still gets stuck and jams up with recycled matter so you have to keep stopping to open the prongs and remove the waste (yuck) and sometimes hard to push down through the bin. I agree with another review here the prongs need to be longer. You can still do the same job with a pitch fork by jamming it down and turning through the waste so would not purchase again.
17.) Better than nothing? Vanes don't swivel back down...
Reviewed by: Peter D. Henry York, PA USA

Believe the other reviews when they say the wings don't fulfill their intended purpose. There's not enough engagement with the compose to swing them down when you turn the handle, so you end up essentially poking round holes into your compost pile. I'm thinking a long-handled Garden Cultivator such as Ames True Temper 1800500 Kodiak Forged Steel 4-Tine Speedy Cultivator with 52-Inch Handle would have been a better option.

Initially, I'm having difficulty getting the folding "blades" to unfold, as required to stir up the compost contents. It may be that I need to figure out how to apply a "lubricant" that will not compromise the compost contents. The concept for its design seems to be valid. Getting it to work consistantly is taking some doing. Haven't given up on it, to be sure.
19.) Little disappointed

I bought this tool because I had read some glowing reviews on it. I am disappointed that it doesn't work better than it does. It is not easy to push the tool into the compost pile, and the wings that are supposed to open when lifting the tool, usually don't open. I have tried oiling the wings, and that helped - they now open sometimes instead of never!
Someone should design a new tool with longer wings and more of them. That would do that job better. Till then, this is probably the best you're going to get - unless you go back to the basic pitchfork.
20.) Not the best
Reviewed by: L. Moore NH

For the price, this should work better. I find that the "fins" at the bottom stick together and don't move the compost as well as I would like. I'd also like them to be longer. A pitchfork does a better job. Dissapointing.
21.) Nearly worthless...
Reviewed by: Her Dotness St. Louis, Missouri USA
Rating:
Worked beautifully the first time I used it. After that, I found that the least little bit of compost adhering to the pivot points on the wings means one or both won't open out. I often must shake the tool vigorously to get the wings to flatten out at all. Plunging it into my bins can be a challenge, too, because it sometimes gets stuck on partially decomposed veggies and must be yanked to free it. This is especially so when the compost is too wet and really needs to be mixed. Forget this product. It's a huge waste of money.
22.) Not worth it

The arms that are supposed to fall horizontal as you pull up stay stuck up, so it's basically a stick with a handle. Save your money.
